Welcoming Government Support for English Dairy Farmers affected by Covid19

7th May 2020

We have welcomed the Westminster Government’s announcement to help support English dairy farmers overcome the impact of the Coronavirus outbreak.

England’s dairy farmers, who together continue to produce over 40 million litres of milk every day, will be able to access up to £10,000 each, after they have seen a decrease in demand for their products as restaurants and cafes have had to close.

Richard Corbett, Partner with Roger Parry & Partners said, “This announcement is great news and much needed for dairy farmers who have been left to struggle, in an extremely vulnerable position, because of the impact of Covid19 on the marketplace. We hope the Welsh Government follows suit to offer direct financial support in the same way.”

With some dairy farmers facing financial difficulties and excess milk, the new fund, announced yesterday, will provide support for those most in need. Eligible English dairy farmers will be entitled to up to £10,000 each, to cover 70% of their lost income during April and May to ensure they can continue to operate and sustain production capacity without impacting on animal welfare. It also comes as the government backs a £1 million campaign to boost milk consumption and help producers use their surplus stock.

Richard added, “Eligible dairy farmers, who have lost more than 25% of their income over April and May due to coronavirus disruptions, will be eligible to access this funding for those qualifying months, with no cap set on the number of farmers who can receive this support. More detail on how to apply for the fund will be issued in due course. Our offices might not be open at present but we are still here to help our clients. Please get in touch if you require advice or assistance from our team of experts with your application.”
