After new rules came into effect in 2013, most farm exemptions were registered as a 3-year exemption. This year these exemptions expire and need to be re-registered. The deadline for registration is September 2016.

Rather than paying an annual fee for an environmental permit, if limits and conditions are met, farms and other businesses which handle small quantities of waste or low-risk wastes may be able to save money by registering for a free exemption.

All farmers who have waste on their land have three months to register or renew an exemption with the Environment Agency or Natural Resources Wales. Not registering or complying with waste exemptions can lead to farmers facing penalties.
