New NVZ maps released
31st May 2010
The Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ) designation in England has been reduced by an overall 9% to 62% land area, following the appeals process. Roger Parry & Partners successful work in this area has seen the boundary amended significantly across the north of Shrewsbury and northwards from parts of the A458 (Shrewsbury to Welshpool road) where land was designated following the NVZ expansion in 2009.
Maps showing the new boundary are available here for the locality or on a national basis at http://web.adas.co.uk/defra
Over half of the 760 appeals lodged in England were successful. Holdings removed from the NVZ designation will no longer need to comply with the NVZ rules although it is still necessary for farmers to comply with the Codes of Good Agricultural Practice and the Water Resources (Control of Pollution) (Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil) Regulations 2010.
The NVZ designation is reviewed every four years with the next review due during 2012.
