Reassessment of Business Rates - appeal opportunity
13th April 2010
Every five years all non-domestic (business) properties are re-assessed and given a new rateable value which is an assessment of the annual rental value. This is used for the purpose of calculating liability for business rates. This so called revaluation took effect from 1 April 2010 and reassessments continue to be undertaken.
Richard Corbett of Roger Parry & Partners says “When you receive details of your new rateable value, you have an opportunity to check the details and compare it with other properties in the rating list. If you think that the assessment or any of the details provided are incorrect, or you feel that the rating your property has been given is unfair, you can in certain circumstances propose a change in the value through the appeals process with the Valuation Office. Checking that there is merit in an appeal is essential and professional advice should always be sought.”
You will need to provide the reasons why you are making a proposal. Mention the reasons on the proposal, including the address and postcode of any other property you are comparing yours with.
Please contact either Richard Corbett or Gail Lewis at Roger Parry & Partners on 01938 554499 or 01691 655334 for an informal no obligation discussion on your rateable value and also for further information on Business Rates Reliefs & reductions.
